This year’s spring convention did not skimp on ways we could “expand our minds,” as Stan Kurth lovingly phrased it, referring to his younger days and the sources of his inspiration. There were many opportunities to challenge our ways of thinking, starting with navigating to all the different events throughout McMinnville and Linfield University! But once we got past the geographical hurdles, we were offered myriad ways to expand our creativity and our friendships.
Stan Kurth juried the paintings on Friday in the Nicholson Library at Linfield, and the exhibit opened to a constant stream of members and public visitors. Stan’s Juror Demo on Sunday was a synchronous way to end the weekend and blow our minds with his abstract/not abstract style of painting.
The Meet and Greet at Merri Artist Art Supply Store was a huge success. Namesake Merri Sayers was there to revel in all her glory and sell a lot of supplies! Co-owner Sally Borg was the ultimate hostess, laying a spread of charcuterie, crudité, cheeses, and desserts while Varnum Vintners poured wine. Our members took advantage of a 15% discount all weekend and 20 were lucky enough to walk away with a door prize.
Saturday morning kicked off early with a variety of classes in the Keck Science Center, interestingly juxtaposing left-brained education alongside our right brain activities. Read more about the classes in the breakout session reviews.
Lunch was a highlight! We turned back the clocks and recreated days of old in the college cafeteria where we could eat anything and everything we wanted, even ice cream, and huddle together in our little groups.
Awards were given live at the dinner ceremony in Nicholson Library, with Stan Kurth relating his comments about the award-winning paintings. Congratulations to everyone who submitted paintings, the accepted artists, and to those who won awards. You are all exceptional.
The business meeting spent time acquiring much needed volunteers for important responsibilities within the organization and fostered a feeling of community.
Lastly, there was a noticeable presence among our numerous new members, especially at the new member orientation meeting and throughout the weekend. We had new members not only get accepted into the show, but also win awards and step into volunteer positions.
