Native American legends tell of the brothers Wy’east (Mt. Hood) and Klickitat (Mt. Adams) vying for the fair maiden Loowit (Mt. St. Helens). We know the magnificent Mt. Hood as a year-round outdoor paradise, with areas for skiing, hiking, fishing, photography, and many other activities. Welches is an unincorporated community of 4,000 residents.
Some of the activities in the area
include:
- 1937 Steiner Log Church (Welches) — Visit one of the 100 log cabins and two churches Henry Steiner and
his sons built entirely by hand between 1925-1952. A tour is offered the first Saturday of every month. - Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum Visitor Center (Government Camp) — View and learn about items related to Mt. Hood, skiing, and trailblazing the Cascade Mountains.
- Wildwood Recreation Site (near Welches) — Explore natural stream and wetland ecosystems via two accessible interpretive loop trails featuring boardwalks, viewing platforms, and an underwater fish viewing window.
- The Courses at Mt. Hood Oregon Resort (Welches) — Play a round at this 27-hole golf course nestled in the picturesque Salmon River Valley.
