April 5-9, 2027
Instructor: Kathleen Conover
Location: Corvallis Museum
Cost: $550
Theme: Painting from the
Right (and Left) Side of the Brain
Kathleen Conover, AWS-DF, NWS, ISEA-NF, WHS,
TWSA-MA, is the instructor for this dynamic workshop. She states that the best paintings “aren’t always planned, and they aren’t totally intuitive,” but are a “marriage of intention, basic design skills, and freely expressing our personal interpretation of the world.” She explains that this “marriage” is between the left (planning, analyzing, critical thinking) and right (feeling, expressing, intuitive) sides of our brains. In her words, we create our best art from “our head, our hands, and our heart” when we engage both sides of our brain.
To help us with this process, Kathleen will give daily demonstrations and printed handouts, clearly present guidelines for composition and self-critiquing techniques (left brain thinking) to successfully develop a painting. She will also guide participants into discovering their own “personal intuitive powers (right brain FUN!)” She will provide individual attention and independent work time to help us understand and apply new information and processes. Kathleen invites artists of all skill levels and painting styles and wants to share all her “secrets” so that each of us can “advance to the next level — no matter where you start.”

About the Artist
Kathleen began painting early in life. She began her studies at San Diego State University, completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at University of Washington, and her Master of Arts at Northern Michigan University. Over the next ten years, she studied with American master watercolor artists, enriching her depth, understanding, skill and personal style. Her vision, innovative techniques and fearless expression are recognized nationally and internationally by acceptance into more than 100 juried exhibitions. Her paintings reflect an openness to her subject matter guided by intense observation and deep personal reflection, containing “rich symbolic layers of literal and figurative design.” International travel continues to influence her award- winning work and inspires her “to be a better painter,” a lifetime goal. She has been featured in many publications and has recently published Iron and Ice: The Art of Contrast, a catalog of 32 watercolor and water media paintings from the DeVos Museum exhibition in Marquette, Michigan
