Create Engaging and Useful Portrait Studies, with Tess Myers
Description: We’ll talk about several different study types and how they can be used to plan out and improve on a watercolor portrait –or any kind of scene! I will start with a demonstration, and then you’ll have a chance to try a study or two out for yourself. These studies can be abstract work in their own right, or the first step towards painting a larger and more involved piece.
Please bring these supplies:
- Your usual watercolor kit, including: at least the 3 primary colors (yellow, red, blue), your favorite brush(s) + wash water container, 100% cotton watercolor paper
- Regular paper for sketching, a notebook is fine
- A pencil, any kind
- Black sharpie or other large solid black pen. Fine point (standard size) or large chisel tip both ok
- Whiteout or opaque white paint like gouache, acrylic
Recommended but not required:
- A device like an ipad or laptop so that you can access our reference photos digitally. I will bring printed photos as well, but a digital device will give you greater flexibility and detail.
- Artist’s tape (i.e, blue painter’s tape, drafting tape, etc)
- Hard and soft charcoal
- Black ink
- You are welcome to bring your own reference photos if you like, but I will provide some.
I will provide:
- Instructions, printed and digital reference photos, a few extra goodies

The Art of Woven Paintings & How to Create Your Own, with Angela Wrahtz
A bit more about the breakout:
Angela will share thoughts on the best strategies to use based on your artwork. You will get help from Angela in this interactive and hands-on session and, time-allowing, individual consultations along the way. We’ll share our work at the end. You will find the process of weaving paintings mentally stimulating and completely addictive.
In preparation for this interactive, hands-on session, bring two quarter-sheet watercolor paintings to combine. Be sure these paintings share a similar color palette. For more information on preparing for this session along with supplies list, go to Angela’s website at www.angelasarthouse.com and click on the “WSO” tab in the menu bar.
- Old or unfinished paintings, sketches, and photographs in the size range of 8 x 10 or 11 x 15. We don’t want to work too small or too large to start with. By the end of the series, you can bring bigger artwork to weave. Bring A LOT! As in 8-10 or 20 or more! You won’t use all of them in the class but having choices about which ones to combine is what we want to start with. The colors in the paintings are your palette–you are painting with “prepared paper.”
- Regarding your artwork, watercolors, colored pencil, and/or graphite, are best. Oil and canvas are not recommended.
- Remember, you will be slicing up the artwork so you are best served to be in the mindset of “this is an experiment” and prepare that the results may not be a masterpiece the first time you do it. Your brain will be tickled, and you’ll do more and the results will get better and better.
- Only bring art you are prepared to sacrifice for the cause!
- For the second class, you will want to have two paintings of the same thing based on the same drawing. To aid our process, we will create those in the first class with a simple watercolor project, so bring your painting supplies (colors, an assortment of brushes, a water container, 2 pieces of paper that are 11 x 15, and an old towel.) If you prefer colored pencils or markers, that can work too.
- If you have interesting papers at home from other crafting projects you’ve done, bring them. Only bring what you are willing to cut to pieces.
- Additionally, you will need sharp scissors,
- pencil and eraser,
- artist tape (white) or if you need a more budget-friendly option blue painter’s tape works.
- A ruler and
- A utility knife with a sharp blade or an Xacto knife.
- A surface to cut on, like a Masonite board or crafter’s board that is knife friendly.
Instructor will bring:
- Copies of Inspiration piece for mini-painting project in first class.
- Samples of weavings to inspire you from her collection of woven art.
- A guillotine-style paper cutter for chopping.
Design Dynamic Paintings, with Ed Labadie
Bring a few watercolor or acrylic paints, one white and one black paper (at least 8.5 x 11), scissors and glue stick or small white glue. We can even share paints and palettes for the brief immersion.
Then, a surprise collage task will follow; those lessons are the focus, not a finished painting.
