From WSO President, Barb Sulek

Thank you all for your patience while the Executive Board has worked to make the best decision for WSO members regarding our Spring convention in Astoria.

Given global concerns regarding Covid-19 (the Corona virus), we have determined that the best course of action is to cancel both the convention and the workshop led by Michael Reardon. While we would have been a smaller group than 250, many of us are considered “at risk”; therefore, we feel this is the most responsible course of action due to the uncertainties of the virus. The thoughtful, insightful input received from so many of you over the last few days has helped lead us to this decision.

All registered members will be refunded the full amount that was paid for the Convention and the Workshop (if applicable). All refunds will need to be processed manually. It is our goal to accomplish this prior to April 30, 2020. Please be patient while our treasurer works through this task.
Those who paid with a credit card will have the full registration fee refunded to the card used for registration.

If you sent a check to cover your registration, it will be returned to you if it is uncashed, or you will be issued a refund check from WSO. Do not send a check if you have not already done so.

As we worked through the decision, I have received many emails asking how to donate the refund to WSO if people wish to do so, to help WSO offset the financial impact of cancelling the convention. If that is your decision, please contact no later than April 1, 2020. You will receive an acknowledgement of the gift.

If your work was juried into the Spring Show

You will receive one point towards signature membership for getting into the show, as is typical. If your entry has made you eligible for Signature Membership, your certificate will be mailed to you.
Editor’s Note (March 22, 2020): We are working with juror Michael Reardon to jury the show digitially. More information will become available soon. Because of this, the following statement is no longer true: You are encouraged to reenter the work juried into this show in a future WSO exhibition. The prohibition due to the long-standing rule against resubmitting work previously juried into a show has been lifted for this single instance.

We will post all of the work juried into the show on the website as soon as it can be arranged, so that you can enjoy all of the outstanding entries selected by Michael to be our WSO Spring Exhibition. Watch for the Show Exhibition Catalog, which will be mailed to you in April or May.

If you were to pick up your award-winning work from our Fall 2019 exhibition in Astoria, you will be notified when and where to pick up your work by the Astoria convention committee. If you were notified your work from the Bend show has sold, please reply to this update, we will help you determine the best way for you to get your work where it is needs to be.

Items that were to have come before the membership will be deferred to our Fall 2020 convention in Newberg. Basically, everything that can be deferred to the Fall convention will be rescheduled accordingly.

May Watermark & Future

Our May digital Watermark will be packed with updates and further information about the things that have been moved to the Fall 2020 convention in Newberg. You will read about the lineup that Anji and Patrice have planned for us – and you’ll be able to register for the workshop to be held with our Newberg juror – Kristi Grussendorf.

This information will impact some of our local partners and vendors significantly. Please keep MerriArtist in mind for your art supplies, as well as American Easel for your painting panel needs, and Menucha art retreat for your next amazing creative get-away.

Finally, a most grateful thank you to our Astoria convention team (Zsuzsa Vamos, Sandra Wood and Becky Meier) and the WSO members who have worked alongside them – all have spent countless hours dealing with logistics and details to create for us a weekend worth remembering. I heard more than once from them – “We want this to be fun!” I am confident it would have been fabulous – a heartfelt thank you to you all!

P.S. Don’t forget to cancel your lodging and restaurant reservations!
