Join the Spring Migration to Florence

2018 Spring WSO Convention and Experimental Exhibition

April 6, 7 & 8, 2018

Come and be refreshed on the Central Oregon Coast at WSO’s 2018 Spring Convention featuring Juror Fran Larsen. Migrate along with her and your friends to Florence, where the Siuslaw River meets the Pacific Ocean. Bring your art journal, paint, and brushes. Bring your outdoor gear: binoculars, beach shoes, and rain jackets. Experience personal and artistic rejuvenation as you explore the coast and learn from Fran Larsen who states, “The act of seeing stimulates me to paint, to imagine, to invent, and to constantly reinvent my approach.”

Engage in “the act of seeing” as you participate in our convention. Walk the beach; look out to sea and notice gliding pelicans in flight just inches above mercurial waves. Inspect sandy beaches for agates and sand dollars. Spot the flight-dance of shorebirds as they swoop, land, and probe for edibles.

The Florence Events Center, 715 Quince Street, is convention home base. FEC provides Gallery One for Juror Larsen’s 80 paintings that she selected for the 2018 Spring Experimental Exhibition; spacious rooms for Break Out Sessions and Vendors; an auditorium for Juror Critiques and Lecture Demo; a banquet room; and abundant parking. All activities, including Fran Larsen’s Workshop, will be at FEC, except the Meet & Greet in Old Town.

You will be awed by the expertise and generosity of the twenty-one artist/instructors who graciously said “yes” when asked to present Saturday’s fifteen Break Out Sessions.

Convention Registration opens with Chairs Gail Johnson and Pamela Haunschild at the helm.    Register on the WSO website, February 11 – March 11.  www.watercolorsocietyoforegon.com

Thursday, April 5, 10:00 am- 2:00 pm is painting check-in. Hand-deliver paintings to the FEC lobby.   Shipped paintings must arrive by April 3 or 4. Ship to Kathryn Damon-Dawson, c/o Shippin’ Shack, 625 Hwy 101, Florence, OR 97439.  www.theshippinshack.com Charlene Wilson, WSO 2016, and her husband will pick up the shipped paintings and deliver to FEC Thursday. Artist Liz Johnson will curate the show which the FEC Art Committee will hang.

Convention Council Chair Patrice Cameron and President Beth Verheyden will have the final say at painting check-in; so check the rules. Each painting will be checked for size and condition of matte-black, metal frames; no-glass-glazing and it must be free from dirt and scratches; “white” mats must be clean with sharp-cut edges; the digital image you submitted to Juror Larsen must match your matted painting.  Happiness is a professional quality exhibit. Happiness is following the WSO Exhibition Policies, page 40, WSO Roster – Handbook. (4-7-17, Upgrade: Policy X. C. 2. a. “All frames must be matte-black metal, free from scratches and dings.”)

Friday evening focuses on Old Town. We’ll enjoy each other at the Meet and Greet on the Street followed by Dinner with the WSO Board at reservation only Old Town restaurants.

Saturday provides a flock of 15 Break Out Sessions taught by our generous, accomplished teachers who offer their expertise pro bono. Your Handy Yellow Pull-Out in this Watermark provides the details to the fun and shared expertise that is awaiting you.

After you freshen up from Saturday’s fun and learning, return to the FEC, Gallery One, and the Artists’ Reception to discover Fran Larsen’s juried show. Share this time with friends; take a close look at the paintings; vote for Peoples’ Choice Award; discover Member trivia; and express your appreciation to the WSO members who volunteer their time and expertise. It takes a colony to run WSO, which enjoys a very good reputation among jurors and art organizations.

While we enjoy the exhibition in Gallery One, the FEC staff will be transforming Rooms 2 – 5 into a large dining room. Illuminated centerpieces by Jane Rincon will grace each linen covered table. Pavilion Catering will offer Crab Cakes, Apple-Almond Chicken, Vegan Gumbo, and more, served buffet-style, in the spacious FEC lobby at 6:30 pm.

Beth Schilling, Artist Awards Chair, will announce award winners as Juror Fran Larsen gives a brief statement about each painting; Becky Meier will announce Merit Award Winners; and Kathryn Damon-Dawson, Past President, will present WSO’s 2018 Outstanding Service Award. WSO President Beth Verheyden will preside over the Awards Banquet.

The weekend will culminate in the FEC Auditorium, first with the WSO Business Meeting on Sunday Morning, 8:30-10:45. Bring your WSO Trivia contest and be a winner! Then sit back and enjoy Juror Fran Larsen’s Lecture/Demo at 11:00 am-1:00 pm. The FEC Auditorium holds 450 people, so bring your friends!
